Chief Minister opens 72nd Santosh Trophy Football Tournament, for first time in Gujarat

Quoting Swami Vivekananda, Vijay Rupani asks youth, “You will be nearer to your goal through football than through the study of Gita” 

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated the 72nd Reliance national seniors’ Santosh Trophy Football Tournament for the west zone at the TransStadia here today.

The tournament is being organized for the first time in Gujarat. He started the tournament by kicking off the ball. On behalf of the people of the state, he wished good luck to the seven participating teams, including Goa, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Diu-Daman and Gujarat. It will last till January 13, 2018.

Quoting Swami Vivekanand, Mr. Rupani exhorted youth to participate in sport, “You will be nearer to your goal (heaven) through football than through the study of the Gita.”

He recalled that it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who as the Chief Minister of Gujarat popularized sports and encouraged youth to participate in games through slogans like ‘Ramshe Gujarat, Jeetse Gujarat’ by starting mega events like Khel Mahakumb, building several modern stadia to provide facilities to sportspersons.

Prominent among those present on the occasion included Gujarat’s Minister of State for Sports Ishwarsinh Patel, MLAs Jagdishbhai Panchal and Sureshbhai Patel, Gujarat Football Association President Dhanraj Nathwani, TransStadia’s Udit Sheth, Sports Authority of India officers, sportspersons and people.
