Gandhinagar, Monday: Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel, while speaking at the launch of the logo and website and social media handles and welcome song of the Urban-20 Summit to be held at Ahmedabad, stated that it is matter of pride that G-20 Summit will be held in India under the guidance of the visionary global leader and the successful Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi. He added Urban-20 cycle will provide a global platform for exchange of ideas on various issues of climate change, sustainable development, affordable housing and comprehensive social development of the cities-metropolises of the G-20 countries.
Union Minister of Urban Development and Urban Housing Shri Hardeep Singh Puri delivered a message through video conference on this occasion.
The Chief Minister expressed his happiness that India has got the host post of G-20 with the efforts of the Prime Minister and added that 15 different summits of the G-20 summit are also going to be held in Gujarat. Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel also said that with this G-20 summit with the theme of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam-Ek Dharti, Ek Parivar-Ek Bhavishya‘, the Prime Minister has introduced Indian culture and morality to the world community. He said that whether it is an urban area or a rural area, we have moved forward with the mantra of one family, Sauno Saath, Sauno Vikas, Sauno Vishwas, Sauno prayas. In this context, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that the U-20 cycle held in Ahmedabad will be more presentable.
The Chief Minister said that in the future, the urban population will increase and urbanization will develop on a wide scale, such urban summit discussions, mutual exchange of best practices and experience sharing will be important to make the urban future and public welfare more convenient and better. The Chief Minister also expressed his desire to reveal to the representatives of the G-20 countries in this summit that there is a combination of urban development and modern urban infrastructure in the city of Ahmedabad, which has the reputation of a World Heritage City.
Under India’s G-20 Presidency, the U-20 cycle will be organized in Ahmedabad. C-40 (Climate Change) and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), two international non-governmental advocacy groups on urban issues, will host a variety of events, including an inaugural meeting of City Sherpa, thematic discussions, on 9-10 February 2023 in Ahmedabad. U-20 Mayors Summit will also be held in July-2023.
In addition to the G-20 countries, mayors and representatives from the C40, UCLG member cities and observer cities will participate in these events and enrich the discussions. In line with India’s G-20 theme of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam-One Earth, One Family, One Future’, the U-20 city-level actions in Ahmedabad will focus on how interconnected and shared future can bring sustainable positive global outcomes. The Urban-20 Cycle will prepare a roadmap towards appropriate policy-making to address complex urban issues and reflect the aspirations of participating cities at the Summit.
A document in this regard will be prepared by the Ahmedabad Municipality, the host city of the U-20 Summit.
Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Urban Development and Urban Housing Department of the Government of India, said through a video message that Ahmedabad is a modern, progressive economic and cultural center of India. As Ahmedabad hosts the chair of the sixth cycle of the Urban-20 Summit, the meeting will have a prominent brainstorming session on the role of cities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. He said that the urban development of the country is a priority for Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. In recent years, the Government of India under the leadership of the Prime Minister has successfully implemented various schemes related to water, sanitation, housing and public transport in cities and the Smart City Mission. He further said that cities are the power houses for economic growth of the world.
Cities contribute 60 percent of the world’s global GDP. Cities attract global business and investment. More than 50 percent of the world’s population lives in cities. The process of urbanization has become very fast in India as well. Hence organizing the U-20 under the G-20 will be a means of learning new things in the field of urban development and highlighting India’s achievements.
Shri Mukesh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department of Gujarat gave the welcome speech and outlined the planning of Urban-20 meetings in Gujarat. He said that Ahmedabad has now joined the list of cities like Buenos Aires, Rome, Milan, Jakarta, Tokyo, West Java and Riyadh as the host of the Urban-20 Chair. The Times Magazine has called Ahmedabad the ‘Mecca of Cultural Tourism’ and has included it in the list of 50 Extraordinary Destinations of the World.
The Mayor of Ahmedabad Shri Kirit Parmar expressed his best wishes to the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi for the chairmanship of G-20. Also thanked the Prime Minister for choosing Ahmedabad to host the U-20. He also expressed hope that Ahmedabad will get everyone’s support for the successful management and implementation of U-20 plans.
On this occasion, Deputy Mayor Smt. Gita Patel and office bearers, Additional Chief Secretary to Chief Minister Shri Pankaj Joshi, Principal Secretary Urban Development Shri Mukesh Kumar, Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Shri Thennarasan and officials and invitees of Central Government, State Government and AMC were present.
