The Gujarat State Cabinet with Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in chair at its meeting here today in presence of Deputy Chief Minister Nitinbhai Patel and other Ministers condoled the death of late former Chief Minister and senior leader Keshubhai Patel.
The State Cabinet expressed its grief over the loss and observed two minutes’ silence as a respect to the departed soul and prayed for peace.
The Council of Ministers passed a resolution expressing profound grief at the death of late former Chief Minister of Gujarat and senior political leader Mr Keshubhai Patel, who passed away at the age of 92 at Sterling Hospital in Ahmedabad on October 29, 2020.
Brn on July 24, 1928 at Visavadar in Junagadh district, Mr. Keshubhai Patel joined the Rashtriya Swayamesevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of 17. He started his political career with Jana Sangh. He was first elected as Member of the Lok Sabha in 1977, but he joined as Agriculture Minister in Gujarat from 1977 to 1980, as Minister for Narmada, Water Resources, Transport and Seaports in 1990.
He showed extra-ordinary skill in the rescue and relief operation during and after the Machhu Dam disaster in 1978. He was elected as the Member of Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Kalawad, Gondal and Visavadar Assembly constituencies from 1978 to 1995.
He was a founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980. It was under his leadership that the BJP formed its first government in Gujarat in 1995 and he served as the 10th Chief Minister of Gujarat. He became the State’s Chief Minister for the second time in 1998. He worked in different capacities for various schemes and projects for the welfare and uplift of farmers and rural development in the state. He worked relentlessly during the devastating earthquake in Gujarat in 2001 that hit Kutch the most. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2002
The late Mr. Keshubhai Patel rendered his services to Shri Somnath Trust as its chairman till this date. His contributions to the political and social life left footprints in the state for which Gujarat feels proud.
His demise left a deep void in the political and social milieu of Gujarat, difficult to fulfil. The State Cabinet, the people of Gujarat and the Gujarat Government expresses deep grief at this great loss.
