Gujarat Chief Minister Mr. Vijay Rupani today said that Sujalam Sufalam Jal Sanchay Yojna, which was launched for a permanent solution to water problem of the Saurashtra region, would now continue for the next three years.

Speaking at a function to mark deepening Akash Ganga Jaldhara Trust’s ‘sardar sarovar’ pond at Zarakhia village in Lathi taluka in Amreli district, he thanked voluntary organizations, donors and people in this participatory campaign. This Jal Sanchay Abhiyan is in addition to the SAUNI project to recharge 115 reservoirs in the Saurashtra region with the help of Narmada waters.

Mr. Rupani said the there is plan to set up ten desalination plants on the Saurashtra coast. While tendering of the Rs.800-crore Jodiya desalination plant in Jamnagar district has been completed, work is scheduled to start shortly. The desalination process to convert seawater into fresh is in vogue in Israel and other countries.

He said that a policy to recycle huge quantity of gutter water from urban areas would be announced soon, which could be used for gardening, industries and other purposes.

About 250 labourers are working at Zarakhiya village pond to create 600 man-days under MNREGA.

Out of 491 ponds deepening works sanctioned in Amreli district, works on 111 have started and 19 completed. Other works under MNREGA and Nagarpalika being taken up.

Akash Ganga Trust Chairman Manubhai Kakadiya said that 150 check dams have been constructed in the area under Sardar Patel Participatory Irrigation Project.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Rakhial’s MLA Vallabhbhai Kakadiya, former State Minister Gordhanbhai Zadafiya, BJP State President Jitubhai Vaghani, former Agriculture Minister Dilipbhai Sanghani and Collector Ayush Kumar Oak and DDO Yogesh Nirgude.

Donors presented cheque of Rs.51,000 for tree plantation and Rs.21,000 for water conservation, and mementos to the Chief Minister.

Those present on the occasion included District In-charge and Agriculture Minister R.C. Faldu, MP Naranbhai Kachhadiya, former MLAs Valjibhai Khokhariya and Bavkubhai Unghad, BJP District President Hirenbhai Hirpara, Gujarat Municipal Finance Board Chairman Ghansukhbhai Bhanderi, former Minister V.V. Vaghasiya and Marketing Yard Chairman P.P. Sojitra, among others.
